Need help with adding chemicals to pool?
I have an Intex 12x30 Frame Pool. I purchased an HTH pop-up Pool Start up kit. The Test Strip shows the pool water has 0 Free Chlorine, 7.2 ph, and 240 Total Alkalinity. The HTH start up kit isn't making sense. The stabilizer and conditioner bottle, which is supposed to be step 1, says to first make sure the fc is 1-4 ok then so what do I use to increase the fc? Do I use the step 2 bottle of the chlorinating granules? Once I get the fc to 1-4 then it says to measure the Cyanuric Acid level, but I don't see a test strip for this included with the kit so I'm guessing I have to go buy a different test kit? I guess this is all for now. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Free chlorine is the most important chemical. At 0, you're in danger of algae - in fact, you may already have an algae problem. Algae could be inhibiting your free chlorine. The answer is to add massive amounts of chlorine. (Shock Your Pool)
Forget about the HTH instructions, you need to shock your pool (Bring the FC level way, way up).
For your pool, I would add about 58 ounces of Calcium Hypochloride Granules (Granular Chlorine)..These usually come in 1lb bags at your pool store and are labeled, Pool Shock. Instead of Cal-Hypo, you could also add about 500 ounces of 6% unscented, Liquid chlorine, or 250 ounces of 12.5% Liquid chlorine if you can find it. Liquid chlorine is better because it won't raise your cynaruic acid (CYA) or calcium levels. After you add the chlorine (do not swim yet), monitor your free chlorine levels every couple of hours. I would recommend that your pool's free chlorine is around 5ppm to 8ppm before you start swimming in it. Also, your Total Alkalinity is too high. You are going to want to try and get that down by frequently lowering and raising your Water Level with fresh water throughout the course of many days or weeks. You could also use muriatic acid to lower your total alkalinity, but that will also lower your PH, in which case you will need to raise it back up with borax.
The CYA (Cyanuric Acid) is another key component of your pool chemistry. When this gets too high, your chlorine needs to be at a much higher level in order to properly disinfect the pool. It sounds tricky and it can take a whole summer to get your pool water properly balanced, but once you do, it will be easy to maintain. Below, might explain things a little better.
