Methods Applied for PCB Assembly
Two different approaches are applied to assemble components on the circuit board. They are:
Through-hole technology: This method involves:
the use of pins attached to electrical components that are inserted into the holes on the circuit board.
after proper mounting on the board, pins are soldered to the opposite side in order to fix the component.
the use of through-hole technology was highly popular in the early years for precision.
skilled labor accomplished this as it can solder pins to minute details.
Surface-mount technology (SMT): This relatively modern technology has entirely replaced through-hole method. It involves:
mounting components directly onto the surface of the printed circuit board.
SMT electrical components are smaller in size
Mechanized reflow oven soldering technique is used to fix the components onto the PCB.
The arrival of SMT revolutionized the manufacturing process of PCB assembly by cutting down on both time and cost.
Complex circuits may use a combination of both through-hole and SMT methods in assembling components. This happens because both the techniques have certain specifications which are unique to that process. A combination of both these technologies is known as mixed assembling.
Testing of a PCB assembly
Once the PCB is assembled, it has to be tested in conformity with the quality standards. In times of âpower off status,â PCB assembly is tested for component placement strength of soldering visual and optical inspections and analog signature analysis. When it has âpower on,â it is tested for performance and physical measurements such as voltage and frequency.

How to check what's positive and negative on a circuit board?
I have circuit board that has no power jack. I'm going to be soldering a new one but I don't know which is positive and ground. How can I check it with a voltimeter? I have a non digital one.
capacitor are best way and easy to know all the capacitor are mark negative -----
in a analog meter use black probe is negative & red is postive,
when u check if the needle in meter voltage shown right to left then they are correct if it shown left to right the negative and positive are reverse or wrong.
usually negative will be thick and on board where positive will thin in some case
