Biological Pond Filtration, The Best Way to a Clean and Clear Pond
Koi ponds, goldfish ponds and water gardens all have one thing in common, they all require the proper filtration to keep their water clean and clear.
The best way do that is through a combination of both a mechanical filter and biological filter. Mechanical filters can include the use of filter skimmers, brushes, filter media, pump baskets, etc., they all depend upon the size and gallon capacity of your pond. There are many different manufacturers of mechanical filters that can accommodate any type or size of water feature. Do you research to determine which one is right for you.
Biological filtration is achieved through the use of filter media that you place in your mechanical filter, which aids in converting the organic waste that accumulates in your pond from fish by-products, leaves, twigs, etc. that fall into you pond into a beneficial type of bacteria. That organic waste is toxic to your fish and plants so mother nature derived a way to eliminate that toxicity through what is called the nitrification cycle.
Fish eat and then release ammonia through their waste. There are two types of good bacteria in you pond. The first one eats the ammonia and then releases nitrites into the water. The second one consumes the nitrites and in turn releases nitrates. Nitrates are not toxic until they reach high levels. The nitrates are then consumed by algae and fertilize pond plants. The fish then eat the algae and completes the cycle, so it begins again. The filter media in your mechanical filter colonizes that good bacteria so it keeps your pond clean and clear. With new ponds this cycle can take some time clean up your water. Your water may turn green but it will clear. It takes time for that beneficial bacteria to build up in your pond, so be patient. Don't add chemicals or clean your media, that only prolongs the time it takes for that bacteria to its job. Mother nature knows what she is doing, it didn't happen overnight for her either.
Putting gravel on your pond bottom can also help in creating that good bacteria. It is a good place for the bacteria to attach itself too and grow there as well. Maintaining your water quality is a key factor in keeping your water clear and your fish happy and healthy. Test it often and don't overcrowd with fish. The more fish you have the more waste you have. Do partial water changes if your nitrates levels become to high. A 20% change every weeks will help.
A basic understanding of the nitrification cycle and how that works in your filter will better aid you in keeping your pond clear, clean and healthy and allow you to enjoy it for years to come.

Where is the flow-adudjuster on an Aqua Clear filter?
I just got an Aqua Clear 300/70 filter. It's set up and running, but I still can't figure out where the flow adujster is that's mentioned in the directions. It's supposed to be easy to find, but I can't for the life of me figure out what they're talking about. I just want to make sure it's on all the way, because it doesn't seem like it is. Thanks!
