In popular culture, the term "Shangri-La" is synonymous with immortality.
For most people, the wait for science to find a real answer to aging is going to take a while. For the time being, the closest answer available would be the treatments available in places like medical spas.
Many people are wondering about these medical spas. What are they exactly? And why, all of a sudden, they are spreading like wildfire?
A medical integrates the features of a medical clinic and a day spa with a medical license, where professional doctors treat patients. Medical spas offer a variety of services like cosmetic and plastic surgery, liposuction, and specialized services such as hydration therapy, hair removal and abdominoplasty.
What differentiates spas from medical centers is that the former is a place where patients can find relaxation, which is a disparity from the sterile and desolate hallways of a hospital. Also, medical spas provide wellness services that cater to the body's needs including specialties such as hydration therapy and HGC consultation. Others even have services for relaxation like a massage and relaxation treatments.
What sets medical spas apart from others is that they are owned and operated by state-licensed doctors. A professional doctor supervises each procedure or treatment; he may be a doctor or a specialized surgeon that is assisted by a staff of medical experts like nurses or nursing practitioners, aestheticians or medical technicians.
As of now, there has yet to be a national standard for medical spas, leaving the regulation up to individual states. This results in a gray haze over who can perform medical procedures, and what licenses are needed.
For instance, some states have no rules regarding laser and light treatments, so technicians with no medical training can perform them. And across the country, some medical spas employ non-med technicians for everything from Botox to laser liposuction.
In addition, there is no law yet on which treatments can be safely done by non-med technician and which ones are supposed to be done only by licensed doctors. Because of this, it is necessary that patients and clients should do their homework first. They should ask questions and get feedbacks first regarding the medical spa's employees and staff, and their credentials and training, before they avail of the services.
Vague regulations and sometimes the lack of them, make it hard to control and police unlicensed technicians who are working for medical spas. Add to that the lack of awareness of clients about treatments that should be operated only by licensed medical doctors and not merely by a non-medical technician.
Medical spas can be great, if not better, alternatives to the starkness of a clinic or medical center. Just make sure it's the right spa, staffed by the right professionals. When your body or wellness is at stake, it pays to do the proper homework.
And although dieting and exercise have been proven to be effective ways of losing weight, there is something that medical spa operations like
