Bartering for a house - legal?
We are thinking of posting an ad on craigslist asking for a house to rent(free for a year) in exchange for building a custom spa (or maybe another landscape feature) on the property (or on the property at which the homeowner is living)...Yes, we have the resources to do so, but I'm concerned about the legalities.
Not really wanting to hire a lawyer...could someone tell me if this is illegal or if we could get screwed over in any way?

If this is your property you can hire to anyone to do anything to it in exchange for anything you want to give and they are willing to accept. You should establish a timeline and a sort of lease agreement which can be hand written or typed by you and signed by the other person, just for your protection. Such as the person must complete 5% of the work each week (or whatever) until work is completed. Then be sure to say by what time you want the work completed, The work must be completed ___ days or ___months from the date of this lease agreement. This way if the work has not been completed you have the right to ask the person to leave and you have proof that the work is not on schedule. Otherwise you could end up with someone living in your house for a year and never complete anything. This way you don't have to accept the answer, "oh, I plan on getting to that." You have a timeline that must be followed on a lease agreement that is signed. Also, you should state that if the timeline is not followed or falls more then so many weeks or months behind you reserve the right to end the agreement giving the tenant a thirty day notice to vacate.
As long as you are not paying him/her with sex or drugs or other illegal things then you should be okay. The person, since technically they are working, should have a SS card or green card or visa or whatever aliens need to work legally.
However, you can check the laws in your state for tenants or renter rights. Hud.gov has some of these listed by state.
