The Character of Prospero Analysis in Tempest by Michael
The Tempest by William Shakespeare reflects the tradition of the romance in Elizabeth Era, a fictitious romance set far away from our ordinary life, which was typically based on such themes as the supernatural, exploration and discovery as well as forgiveness, love, exile and reunion. There are many characters that are very impressive and vivid in my mind, and among them Prospero is more meaningful to me compared with the other ones. Now I will analyze his characters one by one under the context of the story.
First of all, Prospero is a very kind but autocratic role, sometimes he seems so self-important to me.
MIRANDA
Alack, what trouble.Was I then to you!
PROSPERO
O, a cherubimThou wast that did preserve me. Thou didst smile.
Infused with a fortitude from heaven,
When I have deck'd the sea with drops full salt,
Under my burthen groan'd; which raised in me
An undergoing stomach, to bear up
Against what should ensue (Act I, scene ii)
ARIEL
I thank thee, master.
PROS PERO
If thou more murmur'st,
I will rend an oak
And peg thee in his knotty entrails till
Thou hast howl'd away twelve winters.
ARIEL
Pardon, master;
I will be correspondent to command
And do my spiriting gently.. (Act I, scene ii)
From this passage we know that his daughter Miranda is the only comfort for Prospero after he is driven from his kingdom, he is determined to take all the ordeals in time of storm at the sea when he is exiled from his country just for the smiling Miranda, after they land on the island, Prospero learns magic from his books attentively and teaches Miranda to read and write patiently, everything he do is just for his darling daughter though he is very strict with her. When he finds that Caliban tries to rape her daughter, he punishes the monster severely by making Caliban do all the heavy labors for them with his magic. Therefore, as a father, he is very kind and patient; on the contrary, he is very impatient and autocratic to those who disobey his order. His punishments of Caliban are some kind of vindictiveness, as he calls upon his spirits with his powerful magic to pinch Caliban when he curses. He is autocratic with Ariel. When Ariel reminds him of his promise to relieve him of his duties early if he performs them willingly, Prospero bursts into anger, telling Ariel how he saves Ariel's life in hard time again and again as well as threatening Ariel. Out of gratitude and fear, Ariel has to continue his servitude for Prospero, with no complains.
Secondly, Prospero's magnanimous forgiveness for his enemies reflects his good nature.

You do yet taste
Some subtilties o' the isle, that will not let you
Believe things certain. Welcome, my friends all!
Aside to SEBASTIAN and ANTONIO
But you, my brace of lords, were I so minded,
I here could pluck his highness' frown upon you
And justify you traitors: at this time

SEBASTIAN

PROSPERO
No.
For you, most wicked sir, whom to call brother
Would even infect my mouth, I do forgive
Thy rankest fault; all of them; and require
My dukedom of thee, which perforce, I know,

From the scene we know that the pursuit of knowledge gets Prospero into trouble at first, and he is mad at magic. By neglecting everyday issues in life when he was duke, he gave his brother the power to deal with everything in his kingdom as he wishes and a chance to betray him. His possession and use of magical knowledge renders him extremely powerful and capable to return to his country by performing his magic. And his absolute power over the other characters and his impatience and autocratic character hardly make people like him. Despite his shortcomings as a man, he plans the storm with his magic and brings disaster to his enemies. He can revenge for his insult brought by his brother Antonio and Alonso who conspired to overthrow him from his crown, however, he changes his mind at last for the benefits of his daughter and for all. He forgives his sly brother Antonio and the King Alonzo for what they did to him and doesn't report Antonio and Sebastian's murdering plot. He shows great courage and tolerance to them and even promises send Alonzo home first, which paves way for a happy ending.
Thirdly, Prospero is also a wise man planning a happy ending for all.
PROSPERO:
What? I say. My foot my tutor?
Put thy sword up, traitor;
Who makest a show but darest not strike, thy conscience
Is so possess'd with guilt: come from thy ward,
For I can here disarm thee with this stick
And make thy weapon drop. (Act I Scene ii)
MIRANDA
Beseech you, father.
PROSPERO
Hence! hang not on my garments.
MIRANDA
Sir, have pity;
I'll be his surety.
PROSPERO
Silence! one word more
Shall make me chide thee, if not hate thee. What!
An advocate for an imposter! hush!
Thou think'st there is no more such shapes as he,
Having seen but him and Caliban: foolish wench!
To the most of men this is a Caliban
And they to him are angels (Act I Scene ii)
From the scene we can infer that the courtship between Ferdinand and Miranda is one of the chief beauties of this play. It is the very purity of love. Prospero's pretended interference heightens its interest. Miranda and Ferdinand fall in love with each other at first sight. When Ferdinand is in trouble on the island, Miranda asks her father for help actively because of her strong affection towards Ferdinand. But Prospero considers Ferdinand as cheater and bad man on purpose in order to make their love stronger and firmer, making Ferdinand carry logs from one place to another. Out of true love for Miranda, Ferdinand is willing to take this task to prove his true love for her darling, although it is really a painful job. At last Ferdinand passes the test of Prospero. The couple are showed playing chess in the curtain, which adds to the happy atmosphere for the story. Prospero not only regains his dukedom peacefully, discards hatred and make friends with his previous enemies with his own intelligence- his powerful magic. Everything is under control of his capability and everything goes well in the end, which shows that Prospero is really a wise man.
Above all, the character of Prospero is as vivid and genuine as our human beings, who have shortcomings as well as merits. The character of Prospero is very complex and changing over times, he is a kind but autocratic role, a magnanimous gentleman forgiving his enemies and a wise man planning a happy ending for all. Actually, there are lots of the other characters of Prospero for us to explore. We should learn his merits and avoid his shortcoming to be a better man.

What does it mean to dream of angles, demons, devils, and prayer?!?
I know I didn't go to bed thinking about any of this stuff. But i'll tell you my dream. I was with a friend, she was native and so is her family they believed in only praying in their parent's room for some reason. While my friend's sister went to go pray me and my friend went over to this window to watch her, while we were watching i could see her on her knees and her head down, eyes closed for prayer, but behind her i was able to see a demon me and my friend both saw it and she said it meant something, but forgot what. We watched a few other people pray, we saw demons behind them too. When my friend went into pray, I saw the brightest most beautiful light i had ever seen, i looked a little closer and it was an angel. I told her when she was done. then we all went to bed, while i was going to bed i saw the devil above me, i felt trapped and scared. then i woke up. any idea what this dream could mean?! it seems very spiritual, I would love to hear any suggestions.
