Dating back to ancient Greek times, a triathlon tests the skills of athletes in a competition comprised of three different events. The most common triathlon involves swimming, cycling and running. In this order, it is the swimming portion of this competition that sets the tone for the rest of the contest. Athletes participating in modern triathlons usually tackle all three events back-to-back. The official time received by athletes is a combination of their overall performance, including clothing changes and transition times from one event to another.

Training for these individual events includes learning techniques that help to preserve the energy and endurance of an athlete. There are various strategies and training approaches that both amateur and professional triathlon athletes adhere to. Not all triathlons are the same in distance or details. For example, the Ultraman Triathlon, held every year in Hawaii, takes three days to complete, including 320 miles of total distance.

Dreams. . . Who came up with definitions of dream symbols ?

In dream books, you look up what you dreamed (i.e. ladder, swimming, apple, etc.) then you read the interpretation of what that symbolizes.

Most dream books have same interpretations so there must be a consensus of same definitions / meanings.

Who decided what symbols meant what ? How did that person come to that conclusion of dream interpretation ?

How could it be determined what was dreamed about had that specific meaning ?

I dream easily. Dream most every night and remember most of it upon waking. When I look up what dream symbolized in dream "dictionary", it shows, more times than not, to be accurate.

How did those definitions in dream dictionaries come about ?

Who came up with the symbology so frequently relied upon?  Many.

Consider that much of the symbolism applied to dreaming is quite common in terms of understanding of meaning to the human race.  Some of it is dependent on culture. 

But never are symbols an iron-clad source of meaning - the individual sees them in light of his or her own values and understandings.  A ladder to one person may be signficant as to rising, or safely descending, to some new condition.  To another, it may merely be a familiar appliance, only incidental to some aspect of the dream.  The cat is a familiar item - to some it is 'evil', to others 'clever', 'regal', 'indifferent' - or perhaps just a beloved pet for which there is concern.

In that the symbols are similar throughout many books is merely a reflection of what I've written - mankind largely sees these 'objects' the same way, particularly within the common cultural context that you would find the books of interst to you.  In that you find the meanings accurate means two things - you share a largely common view with others about you in society, and you find meanings in that the objects 'fit' that dreamt of yourself by the universality of such symbols.  That there seems to be a mystical application of meaning simply comes from the inner, more cosmic sense we tend to have imprinted in us as to deeper meanings of 'climbing', 'floating' or 'being watched', etc.

What does all that mean?  We tend to take a common meaning in something seen and are able through the mind's own way of synthesizing the dreamt message to apply the connection logically.  While the symbology may then seem utterly concrete in terms of accuracy to many people, the fact is that the connections are quite personal and elastic: our minds are remarkably able to mold apparently sensible connections that 'fit' as we personally see the thing.  This is much the same as the power of the waking eye - if persuaded enough, the brain 'sees' what it will, regardless of what is refracted onto the retina and transmitted via the optic nerve.  It is then the mighty 'yes, but' circuit of the brain that gives rise to the old saw 'perception is reality'.

How useful then can symbolism really be?  Very - and not at all.  But it is likely that meaningless symbols are largely forgotten while those that remain prominently in your conscious mind when recalling a dream have some useful application to help you understand the dream.  The only magic present is that of the human mind and spirit - both of which are considerable at that, not to mention the ethereal which is quite real enough to most of us.

In that you 'remember most of it' upon waking, keep in mind that we consciously have no idea how much we truly dream.  That which is 'mostly' remembered is simply what 'is' remembered - and often that is so because what is recalled was truly important.  Beyond that we have no conscious way of recalling all that was simply discarded, although we'll have snippets of less important detail at the fringes of what was vividly dreamt and recalled.  It is that very focus that gives you the ability to synthesize the message and apply the symbology in a useful, rational way.

Such books are useful - but have severe limits.  You are an individual - and your recalled dream is truly a product of your own knowledge, even if not consciously realized prior to the dream.  To realize meaning requires an inner belief that the dream may hold meaning, careful consideration of your personal life context and a finding of logical fitment thereby of what was dreamt to something of relevence in your life.  The books only help stimulate the review and seeking process by suggesting some 'road signs', nothing more.
