Choosing Between Standard and Custom Exterior Vinyl Shutters by Shad Storhaug
The most frequently asked question in the exterior vinyl shutter business is "What is the difference between custom and standard sized vinyl exterior shutters?" What most people really want to know is "Why should I pay twice as much for the same thing?"
The physical products are compatible and can be mixed and matched on your home. You may not even notice a difference between custom exterior shutters and standard sized exterior shutters unless you are standing a few feet away from the house.
Let's put this in perspective. If you walk into the men's section at a department store you will likely see several racks of suits. There is a moderate range of choices, and there is a small range of sizes available. Most of these suits are made for a guy that is somewhere around an average height and weight, and if that guy walks into the store he may find exactly what he is looking for on the rack.
On the other hand, if the guy who is shopping for a suit is very short, very tall, very fat, or very skinny his choices are probably few to none. These people will likely need to go to a custom tailor to get a suit that fits right. That is not to say that an average sized guy wouldn't also go to a custom tailor. They will pay more for a suit, but they can have it built exactly the way they want it in the right style, color, and type of fabric and it will fit just right.
The same applies to vinyl exterior shutters. Standard-sized vinyl shutters are pre-molded in One Piece and are available in a couple of widths, and the height may only be available in every 3 or 4 inches.
If you choose custom exterior vinyl shutters, there will be a wider range of styles and sizes available. Custom shutters are tailored to your home just as a custom tailored suit is made for your body. Pairs of custom vinyl shutters are made from individual pre-molded components:
1. 4 rails (stiles) - these come in 12 feet long lengths
2. 2 tops
3. 0 to 2 centers
4. 2 bottoms
5. Either louvers (in 12 inch sheets) or panels with a panel cap
The exterior vinyl shutter rails are cut to the ordered length, the top is installed, then louvers or the fabricated raised panel is inserted into the assembly. Optionally, a center is put into place and more louvers or panels are added before putting on the bottom. The custom vinyl shutter is then ultrasonically welded into the final product. The variety of parts in different width configurations and colors give the fabricator the ability to make a wide range of styles and sizes of custom exterior shutters.

honda civic makeover?must and donts?first and last?
i have a 95 honda civic lx.the coat is peeling,carpet is very dirty,i wanna change the paint of my interior(panels,vinyls,dash,etc.).the factory rims sucks,suspension is not that good.the good thing about this is that the engine is very smooth.never been stucked on the road.i wanna upgrade my car and i have 4k on my budget..pls help!!
For Performance The Three Suggested Tuning Paths to Upgrade your Honda Civic Are:
The first path (A) is going straight for the most horsepower gains, by using forced induction (e.g. turbo kit or supercharger) as the base setup for your Honda Civic.
The second path (B) is to tune your Honda Civic with a naturally aspirated setup (e.g. cold air intake, no turbo or supercharger) as your base.
The last path (C) is to get parts that will work for both a naturally aspirated engine and a forced induction setup, then decide later if you want to go forced induction or upgrade your naturally aspirated setup.
For each path there is a list of a few parts to get you started. By no means is this a complete list of parts to tune your Civic; it's just an idea to get you started.
Path A (Forced Induction)
This path requires the biggest upfront investment, but will give you the best gains and the best tuning base to work with. If you can find good parts within you budget go this route.. Here are the following parts and actions we recommend:
Get a Honda Civic turbo kit. A turbo kit comes with headers and its own air intake, and usually some Fuel Delivery Components. Hence, you will not have to purchase headers or a cold air/short ram intake. If an intercooler is not included in your kit, it is highly recommend that you purchase one at the same time as your kit.
If you get a supercharger instead of a turbo kit, you will need to buy an air intake and headers since superchargers do not typically come with these items.
Go to a dyno shop and tune your turbo kit or supercharger. It is generally recommended for maximum power.
Get a Civic performance exhaust system and a high-flow catalytic converter.
Upgrade your Civic's ignition components such as spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coil, modified distributor cap/rotor kit, and a forced induction ignition component. Tuning your Civic's ignition system is a low cost upgrade that will be well worth while for an older Civic. You can find the Civic's igntion components here.
If needed, also upgrade your Civic's Fuel Delivery Components.
To further increase performance, you can add a nitrous systems.Nitrous significantly cools down the air going into your Civic, which adds a lot of power. If you don't have a turbo kit or supercharger, you can still use nitrous as an extremely cost-effective horsepower upgrade.
Path B (Naturally Aspirated)
If you choose not to go big with a forced induction setup, then you'll be headed down the naturally aspirated path. Here are the following parts and actions we recommend:
The most inexpensive item you could get that will give you the best gains is a cold air intake for your Civic.
The second item to purchase in this path should be an exhaust system. The choice of what exhaust you select comes down to a preferrence in the exhaust system's look and sound that is produced. Many choose Magnaflow catback system. It has a great sound that is not too loud, and it looks clean and stylish.
Headers and a highflow catalytic converter will be the next part to get in this tuning path.
Upgrade your Civic's ignition components.
If you are putting out a lot more power, you may also need to upgrade your Civic's Fuel Delivery Components.
The average Civic Tuner takes this path. This path is the best on your wallet and gives you the most gains for the least money spent. More often new tuners will take this path to get a better feel for Civic customization. Some of the tuners will eventually get a turbo kit or supercharger and others will fine tune their naturally aspirated engine.
Path C (Decide Later)
This path is designed for those Civic Tuners that are undecided on getting a turbo kit or supercharger, and/or will attempt to save up for one. If you are sure you will not get a turbo kit or supercharger anytime in the foreseeable future, then path B is your best path to tune your Civic. Here are the following parts and actions we recommend:
Get a Civic performance exhaust system (Honda Civic Exhausts) first.
Upgrade your Civic's ignition components.
Get a highflow catalytic converter.
Analyze your budget. If you feel like you will get a turbo kit or supercharger in the near future, keep saving for it.
