Create Your Backyard Oasis with these Basis Steps by Denise Grant
With planning and designing the backyard can be transformed into a backyard oasis that will offer activities and relaxation for the entire family. Why pack a suitcase and fight traffic or airport lines when you can vacation and relax in your own private paradise?
Your backyard paradise can be designed for family activity or as a private retreat. Either way there is a perfect design solution for you.
Once you know the main purpose of your backyard oasis you will start on your design plans. You need to consider colors, lighting, fixtures and points of interest such as fountains or ponds. With each choice you make you should be adding one part to your main purpose of creating a backyard paradise. Well thought out choice will blend your indoor and outdoor space creating the feeling of more space.
In the backyard you will want to calculate space for different activities. A children's play area, water garden or small pond may be in your design. You may also consider a small space garden area, patio or adding a deck for entertaining or relaxing. The addition of a fire pit or barbeque area is a must for those who entertain on a regular basis. With all these plans lighting, both natural and manmade, will also be a consideration.
If your backyard receives a lot of sun or rain you might want to add a large umbrella or a roof to your patio to extend you use of your oasis. A trellis could also be added to shade your patio and if planted will add privacy, noise reductions and a splash of color.
Dark shady corners of the yard will look more inviting with colorful plants that reflect any available sun. Fuchsias, lilies and impatiens will brighten up those areas quickly. And if you add foliage plants like hostas, ferns and calendiums with these plants the area will have a rich full look with texture and delicate color. A Water Fountain, surrounded by plants, may also brighten up this corner and would quickly be a focal point of the backyard design.
Backyard entertainment adds a new dimension to your backyard paradise. You might want to add a portable barbeque or a fire pit. You might want a picnic table which is great for families whereas a patio table and chairs are better for more intimate occasions. You might want to put in a separate concrete pad for a barbeque for ease of maintenance and to move it away from the area you will congregate.
You also need to consider your lighting for night time entertainment. A well lit backyard is great for family events but for those more relaxing or intimate times you will probably want your lighting to be a little softer. There are a huge amount of choice you can make for your lighting, every thing from high output security lights to tiki torches and candles.
Fences, creating habitats for birds and other wildlife, theme gardens and pathways are a few more projects that will add to the comfort and personality of you backyard. With time and thought you may want to add these at a later date.
You need to consider three important things when you create your backyard design. The most important one is to take the time you need to plan your backyard oasis. You should start with simple things that you can implement easily. Your projects should be enjoyable, possibly even family events, that add to your paradise not take away from it.
The second point in creating your backyard oasis is to work with what you have. If you have an old stump that you can't get removed at this time use it as a garden area until you can have it removed. You can make your patio are more inviting by adding container plants or the addition of a decorative fence or trellises.
Enjoying your backyard it the third point. Items that take a lot of work you don't enjoy doing should be avoided when you create your plan. If gardening is an enjoyable hobby for you then you should have some type of garden no matter how small but if you don't enjoy gardening you should avoid this and put in something you enjoy.
