I believe you are refering to Calcium Hardness. If you have a plaster or gunnite walled pool the average is usually about 250, so your measurement is a little high. But unless you are seeing other problems associated with that, I wouldn't worry about it. I have managed a Commercial Pool in the past where we used well water that had a calcium hardness of around 400 straight from the tap, and never had any particular problem.
The crucial things are to keep the pH balanced (7.4 to 7.6) and the sanitizer level up. With Chlorine that should be at least 1.5 ppm but probably no more than 3 ppm for most situations. I have experience with heavy us commerical Swimming Pools, and in those circumstances I like to keep the sanitizer towards the upper end.
