Glass Reinforced Plastic and the Leisure Industry
Glass reinforced plastic and the GRP mouldings used to produce intricate designs are widely used in the British leisure industry. The properties of GRP – it is both extremely strong and very light – make it ideal for complex designs in amusement parks and on national transport vehicles.
The end result tipped out of a GRP moulding is really limited only by the imagination of the commissioning client and the skill of the designers doing the work. Typically, GRP mouldings are used to make several pieces of a finished installation or shell, which is fitted together on site. The malleable and strong nature of glass reinforced plastic means the mouldings can be complicated and highly detailed – the material quite easily and faithfully reproduces the shapes that have been moulded.
Let’s take an example. If you go to the Lego theme park in Berkshire you’ll see evidence of the strength and versatility of GRP mouldings everywhere you look. The Lego gondolas, for instance, which mimic the design of classic amusement park swing boats, but as though they have been built from Lego blocks, are fine examples of a simple material being used to reproduce a quite intricate shape.
Rollercoaster rides in general are fruitful ground for the glass reinforced plastic company. As noted already, virtually any shape can be made using GRP mouldings – all you have to do is work out how to split that shape out into component parts that work in terms of transportation and fitting the final ride shell together.
Glass reinforced plastic owes its strength to the glass fibres (it’s also known as fibreglass) that run through it. These fibres are laid in every direction, so there’s always a strong core plus the ability to flex and bend along multiple axes without splitting or breaking. The glass reinforcement fibres in the GRP mouldings work in the same way as steel mesh does inside reinforced concrete – making massive additions to the strength of the base material without adding much in the way of weight.
Glass reinforced plastic also holds colour very well, allowing its users to make rides and leisure applications in a variety of bright, cheerful colours.
The strength of GRP mouldings makes it ideal for leisure centre and swimming pool installations, such as water slides. Again, the slides can be manufactured in sections, which are easier to transport, and bolted together when they reach their destination.
You’ll also notice glass reinforced plastic skirting the bodies of coaches, or making the seat edgings on trains and underground trains. It pops up in super lightweight car body shells and can even be seen housing the huge engines that pull trains on British railway tracks.
Glass reinforced plastic and GRP mouldings are the ideal engineer’s combination – strong, light, versatile and relatively cheap. See where you can spot the material next time you’re enjoying some leisure!

I live in Hollywood, CA and am looking to buy a plastic Kiddie Pool to put on the patio for my dog. My dog is small, 30lbs, and with the weather getting warmer, I think she would enjoy a pool. Plastic is a must, because she would certainly rip the nylon one with her claws, or teeth. I live near a Target, and Home Depot. Any advice? Also, how much do these usually cost? thanks
Try Target - the little pools shouldn't run more than $30 - I also saw some today at the local Kroger grocery store - you may look at your local grocers and the drug store- they could be a bit cheaper.
