How long can i not run my swiming pool pump for?
I can't afford to run my swimming pool pump till I get my loan mod done. How long can I not let it run estimate 6 months-1 year depending on my loan mod thanks

DO NOT drain your pool. Instead close it as you would if you were winterizing it. The reasons why you don't drain are many.
1: If this is a gunite (concrete) plastered pool, that plaster will dry out and spider web. Lots of fine cracks everywhere. You also run the risk of the pool popping out of the ground if this is your pool type and the hydrostatic valve in the main drain malfunctions or jams shut. The water table in the ground can actually float a pool up. I've seen it twice. They never come out level and there's no fix other than building a new pool.
2: If this is a vinyl Liner Pool, either above ground, on ground or in ground, if you drain it to below 6 inches in the shallow end..it's game over for that liner. They shrink when there's no water load on them holding them in place. When you refill it'll either snap a seam, rip out from built in stairs or rip right around the top bead and out of your coping track. New liner time.
3: If this is a fiberglass shell, you don't drain it for any extended period of time unless you have a sure fire method of keeping the water table in check. Otherwise It'll float..just like a gunite pool. You CAN fix that if the shell is intact but it's expensive and essentially involves removing the pool, excavating and setting it in place again as well as re doing the plumbing lines ( done one).
No..your pump won't rust. Even old ( 20 years plus) pumps were made of brass. Modern ones ( last 20 years) are plastic. The motor is the only thing you should worry about if anything. Don't wrap it in plastic ( holds moisture in), but rather just a simple roof over it with plenty of side flow ventilation and sweep and debris like leafs away from it ( they hold moisture). Drain the pump via the two drain plugs ( one at the bottom front and the other is on the side mid way back. That's all that's needed there besides loosening the pump lid to let the O ring or gasket in there to rebound instead of staying compressed. That will help that seal live longer. A silicone based lubricant would be an added bonus to keep the rubber from drying out.
You can properly winterize a pool and have it look as pristine as you closed it for 2 years easily if it's done properly. You save your water, save on chemical cost at start up and save your pool from damage.
If you are unsure as to how, I suggest calling in a pool tech or look up the many articles on Pool Closing on the internet if you want to do this yourself.A pool tech would be a good idea especially if your area has had a known freeze. Most service companies will charge between 80- 175 bucks ( depends on how much of the work you've done prior to their arrival) to close a pool.
