Can too much oil blow an oil pressure switch?
I have a 2004 Dodge intrepid, 92,000 miles. It had an oil leak, took it to the shop and 3 times in 6 weeks they have replaced the oil pressure switch. They say they top off the oil, and when the car is at rest having not been run for a couple of hours the oil on the dipstick measures over the max line. And could it be the pump. Obviously I know it is not going to be determined without being able to see it but was just wondering about any suggestions. I am basically broke and can not afford to continue taking it to the shop every 2 weeks.
NO, the oil pressure switch has no idea how much oil is in the engine, it only responds to oil pressure after the oil has been pressurized by the oil pump. A reputable shop should stand behind their repair, you should not be paying for a new oil pressure switch every two weeks. There is clearly something else going on. Maybe too much oil pressure but not likely. The leak could be from another source and may be dripping down onto the oil pressure switch.
