Marlin 1895GBL or a Ruger No. 1 in 45-70?
My dad likes the Marlin and i like it to but i also like the Ruger because it can wip those real heavy rounds easy. But i hear they have trouble firing cast bullets is this true. Does the recoil vary from gun to gun. Is one more accurate than the other. Is one just better quality than the other. Is there one you like more than the other. Any answers will be greatly appreciated. Me and my dad would use it for deer mostly and hopefully some other big game. Also is it true that a 45-70 loaded with 500gr solids is enough for Cape buffalo?
It really depends on what sort of ammunition you plan to use.
Both are lightweight rifles so they will both thump you pretty hard when shooting heavy loads.
An advantage the Marlin Guide Gun has is a four round magazine.
An advantage for the Ruger is that you can use long heavy bullets that will not cycle through the Marlin action.
Another advantage for the Ruger is that it will handle higher pressure loads than the Marlin. And the Marlin can take a lot.
The perfect solution would be to buy one of each.
You ought to drop by the Garrett Cartridge Company's website and read how a fellow named Vin Lupo used their ammunition in a Marlin Model 1895 to take all of Africa's Big Five Dangerous Game Animals. IIRC, for most of his kills, Mr. Lupo used either 540 grain Hammerhead load or 540 gr. FMJ bullets.
I believe you would be happy with either rifle. I suggest you buy the one that has the better stock fit, it will be more comfortable in recoil.
