Instead of finding the humor in religion, Ratliff invests in Carlâs story and having him on the run. But rather than send him on his journey with a compatriot that could provide an interesting foil or help provide insight into Carlâs character, the wayward Christian simply encounters characters who serve a single function. He runs from Danâs right-hand man Jerry (the totally non-threatening Jim Gaffigan) and he gets a little help from a security guard/current Deadhead (seriously, how many hippies are on the Sundance film selection board?) Honey Foster (Marisa Tomei).
But more maddening than the one-dimensional supporting cast is the lazy writing behind Carlâs character. Weâre told that Carl is a deeply devout individual who turned away from his life as a follower of the Grateful Dead and found happiness in the Church. But we never see him pray once. You could argue that Carl was perhaps not that much of a believer or that Dan shook his faith, but that change could at least be gradual instead of completely overlooked.
Higher Ground didnât work for me as a film but I admired its devotion to earnestly depicting deeply-religious characters and their commitment to Christianity. Salvation Boulevard is too busy with a poorly paced, unfunny chase movie to even realize that answering a higher comedic calling would make it a far better movie.
Dan Day (Pierce Brosnan) is a charismatic pastor, and the head of a massive born-again Christian movement. Dayâs got his hands in all sorts of schemes, including a major land deal for a controlled Christian community. The only fly in his ointment is the meddling of a local, atheist university professor, Dr. Paul Blaylock (Ed Harris) who openly mocks Dayâs church, and challenges him to a series of debates. During a private meeting, Day accidently shoots Blaylock with one of the professorâs antique guns, and he tries to shift the blame to one of his devotees; a born-again Dead-head named Carl Vanderveer (Greg Kinnear), whoâs wife Gwen (Jennifer Connelly) views Pastor Day as a new messiah.
SALVATION BOULEVARD has all the ingredients of a sure-fire satiric classic. It has a relevant plot; involving mega-churches as big-business, a hot cast including the first re-teaming of Pierce Brosnan and Greg Kinnear since the great THE MATADOR, and a young director, George Ratliff, who previously directed the acclaimed doc HELL HOUSE, and the Sundance hit JOSHUA.
Sure enough, for the first half hour of SALVATION BOULEVARD I thought I was watching a classic. Brosnan gives the latest in a series of incredible, radically un-James Bond-like performances as the charismatic, and possibly insane preacher. By the time Brosnanâs Day was convinced Satan was communicating with him though a re-run of LEGEND on satellite, I would have pegged this one of the finest films of the fest.
Sadly, things go downhill fast after this promising start. For some strange reason, the decision was made somewhere to make Kinnearâs bland Carl Vanderveer the protagonist, and to turn this into a light-mystery, which strikes me as a boneheaded move. I like Kinnear, and he can be startlingly effective in films as varied as FLASH OF GENIUS, THE MATADOR, and LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE, but heâs got nothing to work with here. For one thing, he strikes me as far too-straight-laced to be a guy whoâs supposed to be an ex-wake nâbake pothead, Grateful Dead fanatic. Secondly, why bother making Kinnearâs bland character the protagonist when you have Pierce Brosnan giving the performance of his life as the unhinged Day. He should have been the lead, but alasâ And donât even get me started on Marissa Tomei, whoâs utterly wasted in a tiny role as Carlâs minor love interest, another Dead-head, who works as a security guard at Blaylockâs university. Another major problem with the film is the abrupt ending, which feels like the producers simply ran out of money, and declined to film a conclusion. Rather, we get several detailed text screens informing us on the fates of our main characters, a device that strikes me as shockingly lazy.
For me, SALVATION BOULEVARD is one of the only truly disappointing films I saw at Sundance this year, as it had so much going for it. Sadly, all of its assets, including Brosnanâs brilliant performance, and a great comedic turn from Jennifer Connelly, are spoiled by the clumsy execution. A real missed opportunity. 2004 Bahia, Sundance hot tub. It was 6 grand and a couple hundred when I bought it brand new, used but in good condition, it looks new on the inside and outside and works great, I'll sell it with the orignal cover and step stool; how much do you think it is worth?
I have to agree with the answerer "anawesom" above me. Spas have little value on the secondary market. I have one myself and looked at used ones before I invested into my new one. The warranties now cover everything and no one wants to buy potential problems and have the inconvenience of finding a way to move it from your location to theirs. Plus, most spa stores around here take back used spas in trade when their customers upgrade. So they have huge sales on reconditioned spas, include delivery and set up, locking Spa Covers, stairs, 90 days worth of chemicals and give you a warranty as well. My neighbor has been trying to sell his very well maintained $8,000 (new) spa for around $1200 for at least a year and has only had 1 person even bother to come out to take a look at it and he went to the reconditioned factory sale to buy the same spa there.
